Evanston, IL (October 1, 2018) – Earlier this year, BBC Earth and Giant Screen Films (GSF) released Oceans: Our Blue Planet and the film has since been enjoyed by audiences worldwide! Oceans: Our Blue Planet features new ocean science and technology that allowed the filmmakers, and now audiences, to go further into the unknown depths than we ever thought possible. Global tech giant Microsoft is the exclusive sponsor for Oceans: Our Blue Planet. Partnering with BBC Learning, a division of BBC Studios, Microsoft’s instructional tools have been deployed for the first time in the museum arena. The focus of this partnership is on developing a range of market-tailored educational STEM spaces to support the release of Oceans: Our Blue Planet.
BBC Learning and Microsoft have created projects and teaching resources across a range of STEM subject areas, featuring innovative digital and technology-based applications. The variety of educational content and activities available for this film were tailored around the messages and themes portrayed in Oceans: Our Blue Planet including: How do sharks swim?, How are ocean currents formed?, How to craft coral reefs!, and How deep is the ocean?
Using these curated educational tools and resources, students can build an understanding of ocean-related concepts using physical and digital models in a real-world context. Students will be able to create digital sensors, conduct experiments, and analyze real-time data to develop 21st century technical skills. Each lesson plan explores a scientific phenomenon which focuses on specific learning targets and includes reflection and documentation activities supported by an archive of stills and video clips.
